What Is a Moisture Vapor Barrier (MVB)?

Moisture from underneath your concrete slab naturally rises over time—it’s called moisture vapor transmission (MVT).
Even if you don’t see it, it’s there. And if you skip the barrier, that moisture will push your coating right off the surface.

A Moisture Vapor Barrier is a special resin-based primer (usually epoxy) designed to:

  • Block moisture from traveling through the slab

  • Prevent bubbling, lifting, or peeling of the coating system

  • Create a solid foundation for long-term adhesion

Why Does Moisture Matter So Much?

Concrete isn’t waterproof.
It’s porous. Even older slabs can pull moisture up from the ground, especially in basements, garages, or areas with poor drainage.

Without an MVB:

  • You get bubbles and blisters under the coating

  • The resin can’t bond fully to the concrete

  • Coatings eventually crack, peel, or delaminate

Epoxy vs Polyaspartic: Why It Matters for MVT

Here’s the truth: epoxy has higher resistance to moisture than polyaspartic or polyurethane.

  • We don’t trust polyaspartic-only systems in basements or garages unless the slab has been tested and proven dry
